Early detection and screening

Because glaucoma causes no symptoms for a long time, prevention is key. The Glaucoma Group of the Swiss Ophthalmological Society recommends eye checks from age 40 every 3 years, from 50 every 2 years, and from 60 every year.

People with risk factors (glaucoma in the family, strong refractive error, diabetes, long-term cortisone) should be checked earlier and more often.

A pressure measurement alone is not enough, because glaucoma can occur even at normal pressure; the optic nerve is therefore always assessed too. Found early, glaucoma can be kept stable for decades and blindness almost always prevented.
