Eye examinations
Glaucoma cannot be diagnosed with a single measurement. Your ophthalmologist combines several tests:
Eye pressure measurement (tonometry):
quick and painless.
Optic nerve assessment (disc):
looking at the nerve head, often with a photo.
Optic nerve scan (OCT):
a kind of “optical ultrasound” that measures the nerve fibres and shows fine damage early.
Visual field test (perimetry):
checks side vision; you press a button when you see spots of light.
Angle examination (gonioscopy):
shows whether the drainage angle is open or narrow.
Not every test is needed at every visit. Together they give an overall picture and allow changes over time to be detected.
